I usually know exactly where the wood I work with comes from. I can’t say it about the walnut tree that found it’s way to my workshop. All I know is that comes from Prague. I don’t know if the tree fell on it’s own or had to be cut down for whatever reason. One of my friend who works as arborist found it in the pile of wood collected by other arborists and since nobody wanted it and it would be later used as firewood or even worse let to rot he called me and asked if I would want to have it. I remember the day he brought it to the studio. I told him that he needs to come at 3 PM latest because I have to pick up my daughter from kindergarden at 5. It was only at 4:15 when he finally showed up. There were 12 logs on his truck and they were all about 40 cm wide and 30 cm tall. So that day I really didn’t have to go to gym because I had only about 20 minutes to move the wood to my studio from the truck and it was a hell of a work out. There were 10 meters between the truck and the door from the house and then 60 stairs down to my studio door. And even though he helped me with few pieces I could feel the pain in my lower back for 2 weeks afterwards.
Anyway I believe the hard work was worth it as this wood is really beautiful. The dark hardwood filled almost 3/4 of the volume of the log and the contrast between this dark wood and lighter wood is truly amazing.
This piece changed quite a lot while drying. From one side it has a flat spot in the place where a branch used to grow.
Also it’s not often when I use golden color on my pieces. I think this is my seconds piece where I decided to use it and I really love how it lighten up the interior of this vessel.

KAELEN (ořešák). (27/24 x 22 cm).
U drtivé většiny dřeva, se kterým pracuji, vím přesně odkud pochází. To nemůžu říct o ořešáku, ze kterého byla Kathryn vysoustružená. Jediná informace je, že dřevo pochází z Prahy. Jeden z mých kamarádů arboristů dřevo našel na hromadě, kam se sváží dřevo z celé Prahy. Jelikož o něj nikdo neměl zájem a v nejlepším případě by bylo použito jako palivo, tak se mě zeptal, jestli bych ho nechtěl použít já. Pamatuji si na den, kdy mi do studia přivezl 12 špalků. Domluvili jsme se, že se zastaví nejpozději ve 3, protože jsem do pěti musel vyzvednout dceru ve školce. Nakonec se objevil až ve 4:15 a bylo mi jasné, že ten den už nebudu muset chodit do posilovny. Auto zaparkoval tak 10 metrů od domu a tak jsem během 20 minut musel odnést 10 špalků (průměr asi 35 cm a výška 30) dolů do studia, do kterého vede asi 60 schodů. Jsem rád, že mi s tím zbytkem po zaparkování auta pomohl, ale i tak mě bolely záda ještě 2 týdny. No ale myslím, že ta těžká práce stála zato, protože tohle dřevo je naprosto úchvatné. Skoro 3/4 příčného řezu vyplnilo tmavé dřevo jádra, které nádherně kontrastuje se světlejším dřevem blízko kůry.
Tvar této nádoby se hodně změnil během schnutí. Z jedné strany je stěna zploštělá v místě, kde dříve rostla větev.
Je to podruhé, co jsem použil zlatou barvu na některé z mých nádob a moc mě baví, jak v tomto případě rozsvítila interiér.
